What is Digital Smile Design (DSD)

Digital Smile Design involves taking photos of the patient and using computers to design dental solutions that best suit their needs. This enables patients to see the results before a procedure is performed. Please refer to our DSD protocol flyer

Digital Smile Design (DSD) helps dentists to plan restorative treatments more efficiently, while also helping patients to see what their new smiles will look like to a high level of accuracy. Being able to clearly visualise your outcome can be useful for getting an idea of what your teeth will look like after your treatment, as well as giving you the chance to make changes at the design stage.

Unlike traditional restorative treatments that focus on the teeth, gums and jaw, the DSD system also considers the relationship between the mouth and other parts of the face involved in smiling, such as the cheeks, eyes and lips. It also visualises a wide range of facial expressions, to show you how your smile will look when talking, laughing and in other emotional states, helping you to design a smile that matches your personality.

Digital Smile Design allows dental professionals to design custom crowns and veneers that are tailored to the specific requirements and demands of the patient. Using these state-of-the-art technologies and innovative techniques, dentists can deliver superior aesthetic smile design results.

The excellence in functional and aesthetic dentistry will never be achieved by accident. It is consistently achieved by a systematic approach for diagnosis, communication, treatment planning, execution, and case maintenance.

DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN (DSD) is a multipurpose conceptual protocol which provides remarkable advantages:

  • the diagnostic abilities are facilitated through an extra-and-intra oral aesthetic and structural evaluation
  • improved communication between the team members providing a better visual perception, education and motivation for patients
  • increased effectiveness of case presentation and accordingly case acceptance
  • Clinical efficiency and predictability through digital technology
  • DSD ETHICALLY INVOLVES THE PATIENTS in the restorative or smile enhancement process, making them the co-designer of their own treatment by sharing objectives, expressing their desires and expectations with the restorative team. The interaction between patient and dental specialist is improved by photos and videos taken at several steps of the treatment. The experiences all over the world have been tremendous. Once the restorative technical requirements are combined with the desires and emotional needs of the patient, great results will be achieved – creating a path to a natural, confident and beautiful smile.

Nowadays having a mouth free of biological and functional issues is not satisfying for demanding patients. Their desire is to own naturally beautiful smiles that harm onise with their physical characteristics and most importantly with their personalities. DSD dentists are aware of all the contributing factors that are necessary to make patients more satisfied beyond conventional dentistry. Developing an artistic vision and a set of appropriate skills are needed in order to become a Digital Smile Designer. Each customised patient design can be clearly visualised and improved with the patients ideas. herefore the DSD Concept allows dentists to implement these benefits for patients, creating a smile that reflects their own personality and greatly enhances the experience and the results for all.

THE WHOLE CONCEPT is based upon the analysis of the patients facial and dental proportions, utilising a predetermined series of high quality digital photographs and videos understanding the relationship between teeth, gums, lips, smile with the facial features in motion and with emotion.

The Benefits of Using Digital Smile Design

Digital Smile Design offers a number of great benefits. First and foremost, it enables the patient to see what their crowns and veneers will look like before the procedure starts. This means they get to see what their dream smile will look like in advance, which can be a deeply emotional and rewarding experience. Secondly, it enables the dentist to plan the procedure based on the final outcome that the patient has approved. The dentist will know exactly what they have to construct and the patient will know what they are going to get, ensuring that there is no miscommunication or disappointment.
